The beautiful beach in Tobacco City, Jember, has recently become a popular tourist destination. Yes, Tanjung Papuma Beach. I first visited this place in 2012, when it was still in its natural state and not as crowded as it is now. This beautiful beach, with its white sand and large rocks, offers stunning sunsets and sunrises.
About Tanjung Papuma?
Intending to enjoy the sunset, my friends and I arrived at the beach in the afternoon. We had lunch with rice wrapped in banana leaves, giving it a fragrant aroma. We also enjoyed fresh grilled fish and ate by the beach. The simplicity of it all made the experience unforgettable as we savoured the beauty of Tanjung Papuma, the white sand beach with its clusters of coral rocks.
The name "Tanjung" derives from the fact that this beach juts directly into the Indian Ocean. 'Papuma' is an abbreviation of "Pantai Putih Malikan." This beach, which borders the Indian Ocean, features unique rock formations that make it distinctive. These rock formations have become favourite photo spots for visiting tourists. These photo spots even have names: Nusa Barong, Kodok, Batu Kajang, Nusa Barong, Narada, and Kresna.
What can you do at Tanjung Papuma?
There are many things to enjoy at this tobacco city beach. Unfortunately, I didn't get to experience all the attractions.
1. Camping
At Tanjung Papuma Beach, tourists can enjoy a fun camping experience with friends or family. Lying in a tent while enjoying the beauty of the moon and stars, accompanied by the fresh breeze and occasional waves, is truly magical. Plus, this area has a camping ground to set up your tent.
2. Enjoying Sunset and Sunrise
Those who love beaches usually want to enjoy the beauty of the sunset or sunrise. Claimed to be the most beautiful sunrise spot in Tobacco City, it makes people curious to visit this tourist destination.
3. Enjoying the Coral Reefs and Malikan Rocks
At Tanjung Pasir Putih Malikan Beach, you can enjoy towering coral reefs. These coral reefs are also one of tourists' favourite photo spots. Their sharp shapes are Instagram-worthy for photos. The rocks here have unique shapes, and I've rarely seen anything like them on other beaches. They seem almost sculpted or moulded.
4. Beautiful Beach Views
If you enjoy beautiful beach views, you can play along the blue shoreline. You can also enjoy the sound of the waves accompanied by the characteristic sea breeze, which brings a sense of peace.
However, since Tanjung Papuma is located in the southern sea, known for its large and fierce waves, swimming or engaging in water activities on this beach is not permitted without authorisation from the authorities.
5. Siti Hinggil Hill
This is one of the favourite spots to enjoy the sunset. The hill isn't huge, and you must be careful when playing on it, as it's shaped like a cliff and is steep, with the sea below. Now, there's an Instagram-worthy spot for photos and watching the sunrise. You can enjoy the vast Indian Ocean from the top of this hill as far as the eye can see.
6. Culinary
I love having lunch by the beach, and this place offers culinary delights. I ordered fresh grilled fish and ate it at Malikan Beach with my friends. Wow, it was beautiful.
7. Renting a boat
At this beach owned by the City of Tobacco, we can also see many boats lined up, and they are available for rent to explore several spots. It would be a shame to miss out.
8. Forest View
When entering or exiting Malikan White Beach, we can enjoy the open green forest view filled with brown and green trees. It's absolutely beautiful.
Access to Tanjung Papuma
Tanjung Papuma Beach is approximately 35 minutes or 40 km from Jember City. Since some roads are not yet in good condition, they take longer to reach. In 2013, when I visited this place, there were no public transportation options. We rented a private car. As of 2020, there are still no public transportation options. The journey to this location passes through open forests, which are relatively safe. It also involves traversing several hills and steep roads. Therefore, if you plan to rent a vehicle, ensure it can navigate hilly terrain.
Best Time to Visit
Visit during the dry season to enjoy the blue sky and beautiful scenery at Putih Malikan Beach. Visit in the afternoon to avoid the intense heat and wait for the stunning sunset.
Tanjung Papuma Beach Temperature
However, the average temperature here ranges from 22 to 33 degrees. So, make sure you bring appropriate clothing to this place. From my experience, wearing a thick t-shirt made me feel extremely hot.
So, for those who want to visit this place, don't forget to check the weather conditions, find out about access, the latest admission tickets, and other information. Make sure you bring enough cash because there are no ATMs here, and don't forget to bring your camera.
