Several times I crossed the PRJ Kemayoran toll road, my eyes were always drawn to a luxurious, unique building whose shape reminded me of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in Germany or the Allianz Arena in England. Curious, after browsing, I found out the building was the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS). The largest football stadium in Asia, with a retractable roof, located in Jakarta, makes me very proud.
It would be so exciting to enter and go up to the sky view deck to enjoy a 360-degree panorama of Jakarta. My positive affirmation came from the creator, as I found out in a chat group on the apps Click & Kreatoria and Kompasiana that they were organizing a walking tour of this magnificent stadium. I was so happy that I immediately signed up, thinking that this might be my lucky day. And tadaappp, I was accepted as a participant in this walking tour.
About Jakarta International Stadium (JIS)
Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) is a soccer stadium built by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Youth and Sports Agency and operated by PT Jakarta Propertindo (Perseroda). It is located in Papanggo Village, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, right in front of the Transjakarta bus stop.
This stadium is the first in Indonesia to have a retractable roof and is also the largest stadium in Asia with a similar roof feature. In general, JIS is the second-largest stadium in the world with a retractable roof. This magnificent stadium has nine floors. As of February 2025, JIS is officially Persija Jakarta's home stadium.
Construction of this luxurious stadium began on March 14, 2019, and it was first opened to the public on April 13, 2022, before its grand opening on July 24, 2022. The stadium stands 73 meters tall and can accommodate up to 82,000 spectators, making it the largest stadium in Indonesia.
In addition to being used for various soccer tournaments, the stadium, which was once used for the Indonesia Youth Championship attended by players from Barcelona and Atletico, also serves as a venue for various national and even international events such as concerts, sports festivals, weddings, and other events.
The stadium, which cost around 4.08 trillion rupiah to build, was designed by Tiyok Prasetyoadi of Pandega Desain Weharima (PDW), the principal architect for the stadium's construction. PDW itself is the architectural firm that won the design competition for JIS.
This stadium, equipped with international-standard facilities, is easily accessible by public transportation, including trains and buses. Facilities available at JIS include media stands, orange and gray spectator seats, plenty of bathrooms, a jacuzzi, massage rooms, a prayer room, a public sports area, a parking lot, corporate boxes, a VVIP room, a mezzanine, and a grand press conference room.
On the mezzanine floor, located between the 3rd and 4th floors, there are special rooms, including the Mezzanine Royal Lounge and VVIP lounge, complete with meeting facilities, toilets, and a prayer room. There is also a spacious prayer room, a large meeting room, and a photo gallery featuring various events held at JIS.
For the spectator stands, there are three categories, the Lower Stands on the 2nd and 3rd floors, the Middle Stands on the 4th and 5th floors, and the Upper Stands on the 6th and 7th floors. Each category has a different capacity, and the seats are predominantly orange, the signature color of Persija. Additionally, there is a VVIP stand on the 3rd floor and Corporate Boxes on the 5th and 6th floors with more comfortable gray seats.
Jakarta International Stadium: A New Urban Icon
During the tour, my friends from Click Kompasiana and I were accompanied by the JIS tour guide team, namely Mas Geral, Mbak Icha, Mbak Shifa, Mbak Willis, and the security team. They explained in detail the stadium's facilities, visiting rules, and various activities held at this international stadium.
Among the many impressive facilities, JIS's sky view deck is its biggest attraction. Located on the top floor, this area offers panoramic views of Jakarta from all sides. After a satisfying tour, we continued our journey to this sky view deck.
To see all of JIS's facilities, including visiting the sky view deck on the 9th floor, visitors need a special permit for safety and security reasons. The JIS team will accompany them.
From the sky-view deck, the panorama of Jakarta is very charming. From the view of tall buildings and the north coast to the elite Ancol area, everything is clearly visible against a beautiful blue sky from the sky-view deck. From the sky view deck, we can see the grandstand area inside the stadium. The sky view deck is about 1 kilometer long and offers a 360-degree view of the city. The view from above is breathtaking.
There's no need to worry about the heat, as the track is covered and the floor is very sturdy. Even though I'm a little afraid of heights, it still feels safe and enjoyable. Seeing the north coast of Jakarta from above is truly an unforgettable experience, especially in the afternoon, when the sunset is beautiful, and you can see the city lights.
Unfortunately, since we visited during the day, the air was very hot and uncomfortable, even though the breeze was quite remarkable. And if you have the chance to see the JIS Sky View Deck, don't forget to bring a good camera, because the view is breathtaking. If you come during the day, wear light, comfortable clothing and bring an umbrella or hat for photos in front of this very aesthetic building.
With complete facilities, modern design, and large capacity, JIS is now one of the icons of Jakarta, especially North Jakarta. Its status as the tallest stadium in the world, the largest retractable-roof stadium in Asia, and the second-largest stadium in its class makes Indonesia even prouder.
That's my experience visiting the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS). The sky deck view on the top floor offers a delightful experience, as from up here you can enjoy a 360-degree view of Jakarta. Besides the beautiful scenery, you'll also see various hotels near the Jakarta International Stadium. Has anyone ever visited this magnificent stadium?
