SEPA ISLAND, HIDDEN GEM IN JAKARTA

Sepa Island, have you ever heard of it? Yep, Sepa Island, a hidden island in the middle of Jakarta, is located in the Kepulauan Seribu. I visited this place in March 2016. Currently, Sepa Island has become one of the weekend tourist destinations for some Jakarta residents who want to take a vacation with limited time. It is still quite pristine compared to other islands that are already crowded with tourists.

How to Get to Sepa Island?

I made plans to meet my friend at 7:00 AM. Leaving in the early morning using an online ride-hailing service to catch the boat was quite a challenge for me, traveling from South Jakarta to Muara Angke Port.

During the boat ride, we spent our time joking around, playing guessing games, and sharing our experiences. I got to know some of Bang Gery’s friends, my friend, and they were all nice people. Before we knew it, nearly three hours had passed, and we had arrived at the Kepulauan Seribu pier.

We immediately crossed over using a small boat, as my friend had already made a reservation beforehand. After about half an hour, we arrived at this beautiful island. We then set up a tent to store our belongings. Everything was done, and it was time for snorkeling. We set off in a small boat toward the best spot for snorkeling.

After enjoying the water, we returned to the tent. In the evening, we enjoyed the sunset from the bridge and the beach, occasionally taking photos. The air was so comfortable that I almost didn’t want to leave the beach even as the sun began to set.

Night fell, and we cooked dinner, grilling fish while joking around and enjoying the cool breeze. After eating, we sat back on the beach, gazing at the twinkling stars and moon, accompanied by a cup of sweet tea, then drifting off into our imaginations. Oh, Sepa Island, this hidden gem in the heart of Jakarta holds countless charms, especially at night.

As the night grew later, some of us, including me, enjoyed sleeping in the hammocks we had set up earlier that afternoon. Though the air was so cold, the atmosphere was so beautiful, sleeping suspended while feeling the sea breeze and the sound of waves breaking the silence, gazing at the moon and the twinkling stars until, before I knew it, Rod Stewart’s “Sailing” faded from my ears.

In the morning, I enjoyed the sunrise and explored the area around the beach. How beautiful my country is, it’s hard to believe that some of its natural wonders have already been renamed with foreign names.

As the day grew brighter, it was time for us to pack up and head back to catch the boat to Muara Angke. The holiday is over. See you next holiday… Thanks to Bang Gery for arranging this enjoyable trip…

Tips for Visiting Sepa Island

Here are some tips for visiting Sepa Island:

    • Bring cash from home, as ATMs are still rare in the Kepulauan Seribu, though there are some available but quite far away
    • Bring sunscreen, as the weather on the island is very hot
    • Bring a hammock, this place is perfect for relaxing, with large trees still standing tall, so you can set up a hammock here while reading a book.
    • Don’t forget to bring an underwater camera because the underwater scenery is beautiful, it would be a shame not to capture it.
    • For those planning a vacation, I recommend bringing a tent; the atmosphere is perfect for camping. When you wake up in the morning, you’ll immediately enjoy the beautiful orange sunrise.
    • For beginners, don’t forget to check the equipment you need to bring don’t end up with the wrong gear.
    • Bringing your cooking gear is more fun, the camping vibe comes through.
    • If you want to stay in a hotel, check the prices online first, as accommodation here can be quite expensive, so you won’t regret it.
